Northern Lights School Division No.113 is a provincial school system serving a predominantly Indigenous school population throughout an area encompassing the entire northern half of Saskatchewan. The schools are very diverse ranging from 10 to over 500 students per school, and catering to Cree, Dene, Métis, French, and English cultures and languages.


NLSD provides a full range of pre-kindergarten to Grade Twelve programs to more than 4300 students in 21 schools. We have offices located in the beautiful communities of La Ronge and Beauval, both approximately 400 kilometers north of Saskatoon.

 

The division is progressively piloting programs unique to Canada, staying on the cutting edge of technology, and integrating the varied cultural aspects of the communities into the classrooms.

 

This position will assist the Summer Literacy Camp Coordinator and Superintendent in administering summer literacy camps in Northern Saskatchewan.

Summer Literacy Camp Vision: Summer Literacy Camps are active, culturally-responsive literacy camps that fundamentally understand that language, culture and experiences define and mold what it means for someone to be immersed in literacies. Summer literacy camps that model miyo-pimatisowin and use Indigenous understandings to build literacy competencies.

 

Location:  Northern Lights School Division

Start Date: As soon as possible

FTE: Up to 100 hours in May and June, Full-time in July, up to 100 hours in August

Term of Employment: Term

Salary and Benefits:  $24.88/hour - completed timesheets will be required for all hours

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Redevelop, add activities, format, & assemble the literacy activities binder.
  • Coordinate summer literacy camp advertisements in local communities.
  • Assist in executing camp training in Prince Albert.
  • July: visiting summer literacy camp programs, assisting where needed.
  • Collecting weekly attendance & feedback; assembling in excel.
  • Conduct follow-up impact activities to increase the longevity of the camp.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must have:

  • Excellent communication skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work flexible and non-traditional hours.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the people and communities of northern Saskatchewan.
  • Able to work effectively in a team while remaining responsible and accountable for results.
  • Valid driver’s license and/or means & ability to travel throughout Northern Saskatchewan in during the literacy camps.

Suggested Skills, Attributes, & Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years old
  • A positive, friendly, and approachable disposition
  • Adaptable, self-motivated, responsible, enthusiastic, creative
  • Superior planning, organizational and time-management skills
  • Able to work with different personalities/working styles
  • Experience working with literacy and/or summer programs and curriculum development are assets.
